The 2025 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival is set to unfold from February 14 to March 2, offering an exuberant celebration of LGBTQIA+ pride, culture, and community. This year’s theme, “FREE TO BE,” pays tribute to the ongoing struggle for equality and celebrates the resilience and diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community through vibrant expressions of individuality and unity.
The festival’s array of events is designed to reignite the core values of the Sydney Mardi Gras—bold self-expression, inclusivity, and collective joy. Minister for the Arts, John Graham, noted the festival’s evolution from a human rights protest into a pivotal cultural and economic event that draws global attention and contributes significantly to New South Wales’ tourism.
Over 80 events are planned, encompassing a blend of returning favorites and new additions. Highlights include the Sissy Ball, Kaftana Pool Party, and the iconic Mardi Gras Parade which will introduce a new block party experience at Taylor Square. After a year off, Fair Day returns with new attractions like Trans Camp and the Karaoke Cave, enriching the opening celebration.
Gil Beckwith, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras CEO, said “Each year, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras brings people from all corners of the globe together for a celebration of community, visibility, and progress. The 2025 festival embodies this spirit, reflecting the resilience, creativity, and unity of our LGBTQIA+ communities. We are thrilled to welcome everyone to this year’s festivities and look forward to continuing to champion the values of inclusivity and equality.”
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore AO, said “Mardi Gras is one of my favourite times of the year. Sydney truly sparkles with diversity, inclusion and love proudly on show. We’re delighted to welcome people from around the world to our wonderful city – a place that embraces and celebrates everyone, where you are truly Free to Be.”
The Mardi Gras Party promises an electrifying night with performances by Grammy-winning Honey Dijon and UK’s Romy, alongside a sprawling lineup across multiple venues. Also making a return are events like Ultra Violet and Hot Trans Summer, along with the First Nations First Light celebration at Bondi Beach, creating inclusive spaces for celebration and recognition.
New for 2025, the festival introduces the Blak & Deadly Gala Concert and Mardi Gras + Qtopia, a partnership showcasing queer history and culture. Notable performances include “They Will Be Kings” and “I Want It That Gay,” alongside Samuel Barnett’s acclaimed show “Feeling Afraid As If Something Terrible is Going to Happen” at the Sydney Opera House.
Mardi Gras + expands the festival’s reach, featuring events like the Solid Pink Disco with Trixie Mattel and the family-friendly Disco on the Green. The inaugural Pride in Sport Festival also debuts, promoting LGBTQIA+ inclusivity in sports.
Tickets for the Mardi Gras 2025 go on sale in November, with exclusive presale opportunities for members, American Express Card Members, and newsletter subscribers. The festival enjoys robust support from partners like American Express, Coles Group, and the NSW Government, cementing its status as a beacon of pride and cultural celebration.
